If there’s one thing farm life teaches you, it’s that no two weeks are ever the same—and this past week was certainly a rollercoaster of unexpected twists, minor setbacks, and exciting progress!
Turning Surplus into New Opportunities
We kicked off Monday with a bit of a delivery mix-up, leaving us with a few more eggs on our hands than expected. But as the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining. The surplus gave us the perfect excuse to pop down and chat with Stacy at The Wagon Farm Shop. We’re thrilled to share that our fresh eggs have found a great new home on their shelves!
Getting Ready for the New Flock
The rest of the week was dedicated to getting everything ready for our expanding flock. A couple of weeks ago, the Egg Marketing Inspector officially signed off our new coop for 200 hens.
We spent this week moving the coop into position and setting up new range areas for both our existing flock and the newcomers. After hooking up all the waterers and feeders and putting down clean, fresh bedding, the space is looking fantastic and ready for action.
A Hit to the Farm Machinery
Of course, it wouldn't be a week on the farm without a machinery mishap. While working on the ranges, our trusty smaller tractor—"Delilah"—suffered a major technical issue, resulting in a hole in the side of the engine block. We rely on her heavily for lighter tasks and woodland work, so it was a big blow when our mechanic, David, confirmed it’s uneconomical to repair. We’re still weighing up our options on where to go from here, but we’ll keep moving forward.
A Long Drive to Exmoor
With the new housing all set, I headed off on Thursday for a three-hour drive up to Exmoor to collect 200 new Point of Lay hens. Unfortunately, upon arrival, we were told the hens we’d booked were unavailable, meaning a three-hour journey straight back empty-handed! While frustrating, our supplier has promised that our 200 hens will be ready for us in a couple of weeks.
Ending on a High!
Despite the bumps along the way, we ended the week on a real high: our eggs are officially back on the shelves at the Probus School Filling Station! You can pick them up there, or pop by our honesty box at the top of the drive, which we'll keep fully stocked.
Looking ahead, we are also getting ready to reopen our egg subscription service to new customers very soon! We offer both a "Cluck & Collect" service directly from the farm and local delivery within Probus.
